Concept or outcome -
threads
Theresa Poulton
Theresa Poulton is a hard-edged, abstract, geometric painter making illusory environments of contrasting colour and distorted perspectives. She exaggerates the sense of depth and space by use of line, shape and form. Poulton makes polychromatic paintings that sit within the traditions of canvas painting and painting in the expanded field.
Through this exhibition, ‘Concept or Outcome – Threads’, Poulton reconsiders and revisits a question posed by a lecturer at the University of Sunderland: ‘Which is most important, concept or outcome?’ The conclusion reached that neither holds more weight than the other and that an outcome cannot exist without a concept serves as the foundation for her artistic practice. This acceptance of transience positions her work in a continual state of flux, without clear beginnings or endings. Poulton is interested in how threads from the past inform present practice. These threads can manifest over a period of time, in physical works, thought processes, personal connections and interactions with those who inspire, influence, support or question creative practice.
Continuing the theme of Threads, Theresa invited local artist David Kenney to contribute works to the exhibition. David is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice encompasses painting, sculpture and writing.

THERESA'S PRACTICE IS TYPIFIED BY HER INCLUSIVE APPROACH AND A SENSITIVE awareness to the needs of others.
