NORTHErN ECHOES

A Young artists’ exhibition

In celebration of the life and works of Norman Cornish and L.S. Lowry, young artists across County Durham are collaborating on an exhibition inspired by their works.

People, places and landmarks from the North East and North West are integral to the work of Cornish and Lowry and inspire themes within the exhibition. Such universal themes surrounding human connection, sense of place and belonging are as fundamental to the work as they are to those who live in the spaces observed by both artists.

This exhibition aims to highlight the enduring legacy of two remarkable artists who, through closely observed, thoughtful studies, created a strong sense of our history and heritage. At a poignant time in our own history, the exhibition invites reflection, through the lens of our young people, on the relevance of recurring themes of northern resilience.

"Northern Echoes gave students across County Durham an opportunity to be able to create AND EXHIBIT artworks inspired by Cornish and Lowery, two remarkable artists very much linked with the north of England."

the themes that run throughout the exhibition are inspired by three original artworks loaned by the Cornish family, and explore 'a sense of place,' 'human connections' and 'belonging.'

“The ability to paint and draw with skill is very useful, but that alone does not make a creative artist... To think about life, even simple sounding things, can have a profound effect upon one's painting.”
