AN ODE TO PEG POWLER

Hazel Soper

Hazel Soper is a visual artist who uses video installation to explore ecofeminism and folklore, drawing threads from the past to the contemporary issues that women face.

Her work has been shown both nationally and internationally, including at NeMe, Limassol (2019); AIR Gallery, Altrincham (2018), the Baltic, Gateshead (2021) and most recently at her solo show at OUTPOST Gallery, Norwich, (2023).

She is also Lead Curator and Founder of Slop Projects, an arts organisation working to promote emerging contemporary art, whilst challenging inaccessibility of the arts sector in rural areas.

Her exhibition referenced the Tees-dwelling river witch Peg Powler and used the depictions of her as a gruesome hag as a catalyst for discussion around political issues of fertility, women’s bodily autonomy and access to life’s essential resources.

Hazel’s diverse practice has inspired young artists to consider contemporary approaches to fine art and installation. The feminist themes in her practice have established her as a role model for students to take inspiration from, and aspire to.
